From the Campus Principal Jane Kuok

Dear Parents and Tenby Community,

This week the students became Scientists and Mathematicians - working on a diverse range of projects that were on show today in the Auditorium and Block D. It was a terrific experience with students sharing their hypotheses and conclusions, answering questions from visitors. Parent judges were in too to evaluate the Science projects – more details to follow next week. Well done to the students, staff and parents who have pulled together to make this possible.

Earth HourEarth Hour will take place worldwide tomorrow from 20:00hrs – 21:00hrs where those participat-ing will shut off all electricity for an hour. Transporter ConcernIt was reported that a van with the registration number AJP3677 was seen hogging the fast lane on the highway and the children on board (in Tenby uniform we assume) were not wearing their seat belts. We have checked our records and this vehicle is not on our transporter list and therefore would like to appeal to parents who have hired this driver to look into this.

Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) Choices for Next TermAs you are aware, we encourage students to participate in a range of CCAs throughout the year. This will mean that students will need to make new choices each term except for the ones that require a longer term commitment e.g. Taekwondo, Scouts and Red Crescent. Even if students wish to carry on with a CCA, they will need to re-book a slot although we would encourage them to try something else.

Please see some highlights from some CCAs after my message.

CCA Booking Information – From Doug Foo (Head of Student Affairs)CCA choices for next term will be made available next week. Parents will need to book their child’s CCAs via the ENGAGE Parent Portal.

Students who are currently in Scouts, Taekwondo and Red Crescent will be allocate into next term’s CCA automati-cally as they must fulfill a year’s commitment. For other CCA, students are required to sign up again if they wish to continue with the same CCA as the previous term, however, we encourage students to try a variety over the year.

Reminder: • International School Expectations Years 1 – 3: Optional Years 4 to 6: Minimum of 1 CCA per week (inclu sive of school team) Years 7 to 11: Minimum of 2 CCAs per week (inclusive of school team)• National School Student Expectations Stds 1 – 3: Optional Stds 4 - Form 5: Must sign up for at least two CCAs of which one must be from a Club or a Uniformed Group and another from Games, (this includes school team CCAs). This is a Ministry of Education requirement.

Once you have selected the CCA choice for your son/daughter, please do not make payment until you receive confirmation of your child’s place on the CCA via the ENGAGE Parent Portal. All payment should be received before CCAs begin unless stated otherwise. Should you require any assistance, please e-mail the Head of Student Affairs, Mr. Doug Foo: [email protected]

Secondary – Herb Garden

Most students don’t have gardens and have never grown anything on their own. Starting with a

simple herb garden is a great way to introduce agriculture to students. In this project, students will

be creating and maintaining their own herb garden as well as learning about herbs and gaining an

appreciation for them and their commercial distribution. There are many types of herbs such as

ginger, kaffir lime leaf, mint, lemon, cinnamon, peppermint leaf and many more. Herbs can be

used to keep us healthy from different aspects from health to cosmetics. It can also cure sickness

and diseases e.g. turmeric is known to prevent colon cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, cinnamon

to lower cholesterol and blood sugar. These is why people need to be aware of the usage of herbs

because it helps people and keep them healthily. On Tuesday 21st March, our herb garden teacher

Cik Maznah & Mrs Alexine , guided us on how to use herbs to make different kinds of tea. All of us

get to tried different types of tea like ice lemon tea, ginger tea and others which was a very good

experience for us.

A closer look at the different

herbs from lemon, cinnamon,

mint leaves, lemongrass and

others.

Sekolah Tenby Students Celebrate Academic Results The Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) results were released on Thursday, 16th March 2017. Our heartfelt congratulations to all our Form 5 students of year 2016 for their outstanding performance. These students were also the first batch to undergo the school-based assessment system, introduced to Form 1 classes back in 2012. Under the system, students will be assessed periodically on all subjects, and will be given grades for various abilities from Band 1 (ability to recall information) to Band 6 (ability to display higher order thinking skills and knowledge). With the GPA of 3.02, Sekolah Tenby is ranked 2nd in the Northern Kinta district.

Neoh Lean Wern, 2016’s SPM Top student reveals his secret of success 1. Share a little bit about yourself. Like school, hometown, hobbies, activities you like, etc. I started my pre-school education in Tenby Schools Ipoh (then known as Ipoh International School) in 2003 and have been with the school for more than thirteen years. I enjoy sporting and read novels for relaxation. 2. Describe your learning journey as a student of Sekolah Tenby. Throughout these years, I am truly grateful to have dedicated and inspiring teachers. Sekolah Tenby has offered me many avenues to grow as a student, in terms of academic progress as well as in extra-curricular activities. I have been granted opportunities to serve in student leadership positions and learned to accept the responsibilities that come with such positions. The culmination of this holistic education experience at Tenby has made me a wholesome person with a positive attitude. 3. You have enrolled in the Tenby A-Level for the January intake. What are your experiences so far? Tenby A-Level has a good emphasis on elocution, drama and debates which help students refine their communicational and interpersonal skills, hence widening their intellectual horizons. 4. What do you think about the Malaysian curriculum? Has it helped you to pursue your studies to a higher level? The revamped PT3 and SPM examination have since then incorporated more higher order thinking skills questions which necessitate the students’ ability to understand, analyse and apply the concepts learned towards problem solving. The focus is on active learning and to develop students’ analytical and creative capability. I am confident that under the revised curriculum, students are well prepared for a higher level of learning. 5. What are the courses that you intend to take? I plan to pursue a course in Actuarial Science with an option for Engineering. 6. What are the reasons behind your overwhelming victory? A positive mindset is a prerequisite to achieve any goals in life. Self-discipline, determination and willingness to embrace challenges are equally important traits. I am fortunate to have parents who have always been supportive of me in all my endeavours. Without doubt, teachers in Primary and Secondary schools have played a pivotal role in my academic progress. 7. What is your advice to the current SPM students? Paying our utmost attention in class will help us better understand the topics taught and completing all the given assignments will reinforce our understanding. I would discourage ‘burning the midnight oil’ as it is difficult to remain focussed. It is much more productive to prepare consistently for the examinations as last minute revision will result in panic and anxiety.

News from Tenby Early Years Centre Ipoh

Wow! What a fun-filled morning it was at Early Years Fun Day last Friday 17th March. All the children arrived

in their brightly coloured red, blue, green and yellow T-shirts representing their house colours. The day

kicked off with the March Past followed by our National Anthem and not missing out the Tenby Cheer which

got the all parents and spectators clapping and moving to the music.

As you are aware, for most preschoolers, running and playing actively are as natural as breathing. They

have endless energy which should be channeled to provide fun and enjoyment, as well as giving them the

chance to participate in a wide range of physical activity while developing an understanding of how the body

work and move.

Maths and Science Week – 20th March to 24th March

We had a wonderful Maths and Science Week, engaging in the life-changing and

fascinating world of Science. The focus on Science aims to bring an awareness for

students to know Science are fundamental into everyday life. Children had different

learning experiences about the changes in their surrounding environment. The

Nursery students investigated on the liquid based activities. They observed the

changes to water when mixed with other substances.

As for Year 1, the students explored the five senses. They had a great time during

the scavenger hunt looking for the things that involved the five senses. Besides

that, they also used different recycled materials to create musical instruments. The

students learnt to make simple predictions and shared their reflections before and

after the experiment.

For Maths, the students explored different mathematical concepts

taught in the past few months. There were many opportunities for

outdoor learning and play-based activities such as sorting colours,

making shapes using tooth picks, shapes hunt, time, number bond to

20 and measurement. It was

pleasing to see the Year 1

students model and explain the

strategies that they had used to

make number bonds and

measurement.

Our Mission

To enable students to:

• achieve their full potential for academic excellence and achievements in sports

and the arts

In line with the school’s mission, teachers in International Primary strive to bring the best out of the

children under their care. The teachers are constantly looking for opportunities to share good practice

as part of their Continuous Professional Development (CPD).

This week, Ms. Leuty (Deputy Head) led working lunch sessions to share tips on leading Guided

Reading sessions in the classroom. Ms. Leuty worked with the children while the teachers observed

and noted useful strategies that they can apply in their own teaching.

Year 5E

The new term saw a great start for Year 5E. We are beginning to explore all there is

to learning and more…

GROUP WORK

The Jigsaw Co-operative

Learning Strategy is a learning

opportunity where each group is

assigned a different piece of

information and then goes

around to ‘fill in the missing

piece’ by learning from other

groups.

SCIENTIFIC ENQUIRY

We have learned to pose appropriate scientific questions to conduct our scientific

investigations.

What is my prediction? What happens if we changed the variables?

What is my hypothesis? How do I make it a fair test?

ROLE PLAY

Which role are you playing in the story? We are learning to explore and empathise with the

characters’ feelings by deducing information from the texts for evidence.

CLASS PRESENTATION

Learning to speak in class and in public helped us build our communication skills and confidence.

We learned to articulate and organise our thoughts and ideas effectively to make a successful class

presentation through debates as well as show and tell sessions.

NUMBER WONDER

Numbers are everywhere. Let’s make Maths fun! We are young aspiring mathematicians at work.

We understand that the focus of good mathematics learning and teaching is to keep the interaction

between teacher and students; as well as among peers high. Constructive discussions help us grasp

important knowledge and make connections in our learning.

Model United Nations

Last weekend witnessed a visit to the MUN conference being held at the IGB International School in Sungai Buloh. The trip was led by our new leadership team of San Jet and Sean who had ensured that the younger members were fully trained and prepared for the intellectual challenges that they faced over the three days. As always, our team performed exceptionally well and this was reflected in the success achieved during the conference. San Jet was awarded a certificate in recognition of being the Most Diplomatic Delegate whilst Jarod was acknowledged as the Best Delegate in his respective council. Sean, Benjamin and newcomer Harith were all given ‘Honourable Mentions’ during the Closing Ceremony. Some of our older MUNers such as Natalie, Isaac, Darius and Charles will now focus on their forthcoming IGCSE final exams so the baton is well and truly handed over to the new genera-tion of participants. New blood is always needed in this C.C.A. and girls in particular will be welcomed into our ranks to meet the rightful demands of gender equality. Therefore, please consider the Model United Nations when choosing C.C.A. options in the months ahead.

Many thanks to Ms. Mangales and Mr. Sandran for enabling the trip to happen.

News from……

TENBY SCHOOLS IPOH INTERACT CLUB

Tenby Schools Ipoh Interact Club had yet again embarked on an Annual project this year, in conjunction with Valentine’s Day. The project ran from the 1st till the 15th February 2017. The task to sell roses and chocolates to teachers and students was organised well by the team. Organising Chairpersons Thomas Parkinson and Rebecca Davidson took the lead to run this project. All proceeds will be channelled to the United Nations Polio Plus Fund to purchase vials of vaccination for children in remote areas of Afghanistan, Bangladesh and India where polio is still rampant and parents who are farmers are unable to journey far to obtain vaccinations for their children. A large majority of children from these families are stricken by polio which impedes their daily lives. As reported by the Organising Chairperson, Thomas Parkinson,

“To begin, I’ll admit I was surprised when I was selected as the OC for the Valentine’s Project; a project that’s no

small deal at our school, and honestly felt a slight sense of dread at the idea of handling such a large project

such a short time after becoming an official Interactor, especially for such an important cause as Polio.

Despite all this, I still had high faith in myself, mostly helped by Ms Bernie and the Interact president, Praenaay,

who both had their faith and trust in me all the way and were always available and willing to lend a helping hand

overcoming obstacles when they came up, while still giving me the space and time I needed to run the project

the way I saw fit.

There were a few bumps along the way as with most projects on this scale, and a few sleepless nights for my

amazing committee and I, trying to make sure this project went as smoothly as possible, and thereby producing

great results. In hindsight, I’m grateful for every bump along the way, providing my team and I with great

learning opportunities, and I’m extremely grateful to everyone who chipped in to make this year’s Valentine’s

Day Project a success. Special thanks go to Ms. Bernie, Praenaay Bhardwaj, Zulheikal Zulherick, Lara Alina

Zaman, and all the representatives from every year who helped prepare and deliver gifts.”

A huge thank you to each and everyone who supported us in this project. With an allowance of RM2000/- from

our account and a profit of RM990/- combined, we will forward this amount converted to USD via the Rotary

Club of Greentown, to the United Nations.

Thank you.
