AUGUST is MEMBERSHIP Month

Club of Kalgoorlie

2014/15 President: Esther Roadnight OAM

Doing Good since 4 July 1947

From President Esther

Long Arms of Rotary

Important Dates

Club Calendar

President Esther Roadnight OAM

Our thoughts this week have been with Club members who have either had health issues themselves or with family members.

Cherie on the loss of her beloved mother. Cherie is currently in Warrnambool with family. The thoughts of Club members are with Cherie and family at this time. Gavin underwent surgery on Tuesday. All has gone well, but Gavin needs to stay in Perth for at least another week. Gloria's daughter Rebekah who had a bit of a health scare, but all is well now. It was great to have Charmaine back at Rotary this week after a couple of weeks of illness. Danny's mother and mother in law both have had health issues the past few weeks. Stephen has been downed by the dreaded flu and is still battling the last of the symptoms. Hopefully, we will see him back at Rotary very soon. I think that has covered everyone. If you have been missed it's not because we don't care, it's because we are unaware.

What a great last two meetings we have had. We have gone through the Friends of the Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie and members present have

endorsed the process and guidelines. We should have our first Friend within the next few weeks.

We had a discussion about Rotary Food Discovery. Cherie has done a massive amount of work preparing guidelines and application forms for vendors. As we discussed, without the guarantee of at least 4 or 5 high profile food outlets from outside the City the Food Discovery would not be that successful. So it was decided not to proceed this year, but we will work on getting this innovative event up and running next year.

Last Monday Directors presented their plan for activities and projects for the year for all members. It is only a plan and can change at any time for whatever reason, but it gives members a guide and idea of what is planned for the year.

Ross won the Joker Jackpot this week, but luckily (for the club) he did not draw the Joker!

Danny fined everyone present for misdemeanours including himself for whilst he was being a single dad when Kylie was away

looking after her mother. Danny learnt how to use the washing machine, dryer and oven.

Our Guest Speaker this coming Monday will be Mike Lee President of the Goldfields Brass Band. At the meeting the club will be presenting Mike with a cheque to enable the Band to purchase a new computer and printer to enable them to continue their great work in the City.

The following week there will be no Rotary on Monday night as we will be joining the other two clubs for the District Governor's Official visit.

Monday night I related to members present how the arms of Rotary reach out to the community in unexpected ways. There is not enough space in my column to relay this for all members so I will do it as a separate article.

Please enjoy your week as we Light up Rotary

From President Esther ...

Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie meets at the Tower Hotel on Mondays at 6.00pm for 6.30pm. Visitors welcome!

Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie

I preface this piece by indicating that I will not be disclosing anyone's name to preserve their privacy.

In early June this year I received a phone call from a person who I have known for many, many years in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. (This person insists on calling me Mrs Roadnight, to my great embarrassment.)

She was asking if Rotary could help in this situation. I asked her to send me an email so I could then take some action. I had no idea what action at the time.

This person's brother’s step-daughter and husband needed assistance. Below is an excerpt of the email sent to me (I have deleted any information that needs to be kept confidential):

?? and her husband ?? moved into their new home March of last year. They had their home built and intended to do all the yard work themselves to help with costs. They have done a lot in between their work commitments but unfortunately along the way there have been some medical issues to confront.

?? underwent a long awaited kidney transplant operation at the end of 2012 and just prior to last Christmas they were dealt the devastating news that ?? had cancer in his old kidney.

This has now progressed into his liver, heart & possibly his spine. The prognosis is not good as they can do no more treatment and he is living now on borrowed time as in January he was given 3-6 months to live.

As you can imagine this situation is taking its toll on them both and ?? has been trying to do all the outside work herself as she is a very independent person. She needed decking done to an area at the back of her home and someone has barely started this for her back in March and never returned.

She is most upset that this has happened and it is upsetting for ?? knowing that she still has so much work to do without his help. She has nowhere else to go for help and we thought of the Rotary.

When we told her told today that you had been contacted and said that it is something that Rotary could help with,

she just burst into tears and said please go ahead and get it organised.

The area to have decking is about 7m x 5m and they have purchased the beams & the stirrups but as yet they have to purchase the decking boards.

After receiving the email I forwarded it to DG Hank De Smit from District 9455. Who in turn put out the call for assistance to the clubs in his district.

In the meantime ?? health was deteriorating and he was in and out of hospital.

The Rotary Club of Midland was amazing. Their then President talked to groups she knew and the Caversham Training Centre indicated they were willing to do the job and give participants education at the same time.

My acquaintance contacted me on Sunday 10 August and let me know that the decking was completed and looks magnificent. The volunteers were wonderful. Apparently there were a number of groups involved.

Sadly, ?? didn't see the decking when it was completed as he passed away Friday evening. However, he was aware of the work that had been done to date and that completion was imminent.

The family are all appreciative and thankful for the support that has been provided to these young people.

This is why I am so proud to be a Rotarian. If we can't do it we can always find someone who can.

Is it the TRUTH?

Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER

FRIENDSHIPS?

Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Quote of the Week

It has been the way of Rotary

to focus thought upon matters

in which members are in

agreement, rather than upon

matters in which they are in

disagreement.
