2012ANNUAL REPORT
BUILDING A BETTER PLACE BUILDING CAPACITY
LETTER FROM THE CHAIR In January of 2007, the Baton Rouge Area Foundation (BRAF) reached out to leaders in the Northshore area to assess the opportunity for starting a local community Foundation. Having a long history with BRAF and the work they do in the capital area, I was aware of the impact a successful community Foundation could have on a region and its people. Therefore, when asked, I accepted a leadership position
on the board of the newly formed Northshore Community Foundation, and in 2011, I proudly assumed the reins of Chairman.
In just six years, our Foundation has grown its asset base over $12 million and granted over $3.5 million to nonprofits serving the greater good. We are actively involved in community development and civic leadership efforts in St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, St. Helena and Washington parishes and we have become the center for philanthropy in the region.
While we are deeply grateful for the human and financial investment BRAF made to get our Foundation firmly started, it is time for our local leaders to assume the responsibility of making our Foundation thrive. Our fund donors and supporters make the work we do possible, and together, we are all building a better place.
Thank you, sincerely, for your support.Jimmy Maurin Chairman, Board of Directors

NONPROFIT SUPPORT AT THE COATNEY CENTER FOR PHILANTHROPYWith a visionary gift by philanthropist Doyle Coatney, the Coatney Center for Philanthropy opened in 2008, with the intent to serve nonprofit organizations as a leadership development, training and resource center. The vision was for the Coatney Center to become identified as the literal and figurative “center” of philanthropy in our region, promoting and enhancing the work of our partners in the nonprofit sector. The center is available on a no-fee basis for all nonprofits operating in our region and is continually used for trainings, meetings, seminars and workshops supporting the sector.

In 2012, the Coatney Center was utilized by over 250 nonprofit organizations, which included over 280 people per month visiting the facility. This service has a direct impact on the quality and capacity of our partners to meet their critical missions.

FUND MANAGEMENTAt our core, we are committed to helping donors make the most of their charitable giving. We are an unbiased resource with unparalleled knowledge about the needs of both donors and our region, serving those who believe that true philanthropy goes beyond making a simple donation – it is a commitment to making a difference. We offer many different types of funds, always ensuring our donors’ desires are paramount and helping them achieve the impact they seek.
COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP INITIATIVESOur civic leadership initiatives are intended to steer our communities toward solutions for challenges and seize opportunities. Our endeavors in this arena have produced substantial results, including the creation of the St. Tammany Suicide Task Force, which establishes and networks mental health support services for those in crisis. Additionally, we partnered with the City of Mandeville to create a plan for a vibrant town center to drive economic and quality of life opportunities. We also continue to work with other community partners to support efforts to create centers of excellence in our school systems. Under the leadership of our Partners in Civic Advancement, we will work to impact public policy for the good of our region.

BUILDING COMMUNITIES
WHY IT MATTERS
“The Northshore Community Foundation is a wonderful community partner. They are aware of the needs of the Northshore and they take a leadership role in responding to them. As a social service organization, it is comforting to have the support of the Northshore Community Foundation to help us continue to meet the needs of people with disabilities.”Sylvia Bush, OPTIONS, Inc.
“From our inception, Christwood has partnered with other not-for-profit leaders to enhance our mission to the community. The Northshore Community Foundation is a perfect alliance for us for our mutual benefit and to serve the Northshore. Christwood could not be more pleased to be in this strategic partnership.”Steve Holzhalb, III, Christwood Retirement Community
“Relationships and changed lives...those are two touchstones for Upward Community Services. Through the Northshore Community Foundation we were able to establish a partnering relationship with Mr. Doyle Coatney that helps us change the lives of the people we serve.”Pastor Alfred Young, Upward Community Services
“Immediately after the death of my 12-year old son from heart disease, God placed a vision in my heart to secure a lifesaving automated external defibrillator (AED) for every St. Tammany Parish Public School. As donations were received, the need for a 501(c)3 fund became urgent. After being introduced to the Northshore Community Foundation (NCF) and recognizing its mission to enhance the quality of life on the Northshore, my heart was filled with peace, confidence, and trust of our funds. With the support of NCF and many generous donors, the students and staff in St. Tammany Public Schools are now ‘heart safe’.”Ann Hebert, Jeremy Hebert Defibrillator Fund
